Bowie in Berlin

about

Gorgy Porgy was late 70s funk hit, originally recorded by TOTO but I've attempted to give it a late 70s Bowie 'vibe', which seems to suit the melancholic nature of the lyrics.

While attempting this track, I discovered a reverb space designer in the recording software that I use and was delighted to find a setting called 'Hansa Studio'. This is where Bowie recorded Low & Heroes while in his 'Berlin period'. There's no individual reverb setting on each individual track but everything has been mixed within the reverb space on the master track to make it sound live.

I tried to mimic Bowie's dramatic low register 'vocal' (hopefully not lapsing into parody), by double tracking the lead vocal and applying a phaser to only one of the tracks. This was done to give it the vocal more presence in the mix when singing down in a low tenor / baritone range.

Bowie's producer at the time and for many other albums, was Tony Visconti, who famously created a massive drum snare sound during the 'Low' album using an effect called an Eventide harmoniser. To achieve this type of thing, I've used two drums tracks: one dry & one with a 'gated reverb' snare and toms. I've also set the entire mix back into the reverb a little more to give the recording a 'sense of place'.
